The Zone

Feel the power of paying most attention to what is most important.

From the 120 Meditations · #114 · Destiny

Of a lifestyle of ongoing learning and love of wisdom

I am worthy of daily wisdom. Seek first the kingdom of God, and all else will be given. (Mt 6:33). My body needs bread, and my mind needs truth, and both are fed by what I choose to take in. So I guard the doors of my attention. The world shouts, but wisdom whispers, and I make time each day to hear it. Monks read slowly, until reading becomes listening, and listening becomes prayer. Mary sat at the feet of the Teacher while the house rushed around her, and she chose the better part, the one thing that would not be taken away. So before the day chooses for me, I choose: a page of Scripture, a truth to walk with through the day, and a meditation to ponder in the night.

I take a breath and say yes to the grace of daily wisdom, seeking first the kingdom, and trusting that all else will be given.

THE ZONE Distraction Delusion Stress outward — more urgent, less important

Gold at the centre, not red at the edge. The point is what draws you in, not what alarms you.

The centre — most important, no urgency

The Zone

Pure importance. You are doing what matters most and nothing is on fire — no emergency, no adrenaline, no performance of busyness. This is the flow state.

The endless and effortless fulfilment of the overflowing lifestyle.

It is not a reward for getting everything else done. It is where you are meant to live, and everything outside it is what keeps you out.

Second ring — importance with urgency

Stress

You are doing what matters, but under pressure. And there is a lie hidden in it: that the urgency proves the importance.

It does not. Turning the urgency volume up is an artificial inflation of importance. The work is no more important because it is on fire — it is only harder, and you are only more tired.

Third ring — urgency without importance

Delusion

This is the failure to plan, arriving as a plan to fail. Everything you do is urgent and nothing you do is important — and the motion feels like progress, which is the delusion.

If you are not living your dream, you are living somebody else's. And it is worse than that: you are not even living their dream, you are putting out their fires.

Outer ring — no urgency, no importance

Distraction

Netflix and potato chips. Video games. Doom scrolling. The hours that leave no trace.

Not wickedness — just the furthest point from the centre, where the time goes and nothing comes back.

Anything truly urgent is likely to happen again. If it is real, it is not an emergency — it is an invitation to plan for it, so that next time you can stay in the centre.

Psalm 27

"One thing I have asked of the Lord, this is what I seek." The one-thing anointing — a life with a single centre.

Matthew 6

"Seek first the kingdom of God, and all these things will be added to you." First is a position, not a sequence.

Matthew 6

"If your eye is single, your whole body will be full of light." A single eye is what living in the Zone actually is.
